How can retinal detachment be diagnosed effectively?

A slit lamp examination is primarily used to evaluate the anterior segment of the eye, including the cornea, lens, and anterior chamber. While it can provide some information about the eye's structure, it is not the most effective diagnostic tool for identifying retinal detachment.

In contrast, ultrasound is a highly effective method for diagnosing retinal detachment. This imaging technique can visualize the retina in detail and detect any changes or detachments that might not be observable through direct examination or other imaging modalities. An ultrasound is particularly valuable in cases where the view of the retina is obscured, such as in patients with cataracts or hemorrhages.

Fundoscopic examination, performed using an ophthalmoscope, allows the healthcare provider to directly visualize the retina, helping to identify tears or detachments. This method is also quite effective and commonly used in clinical settings.

While CT scans may be helpful in assessing associated orbital or bony injuries, they are not routinely employed for diagnosing retinal detachment due to their lower sensitivity compared to ultrasound or direct examination methods.
